I'm deep into planning my sister's summer bridal shower, and I feel the effects of a year and a half without parties infusing my ideas (and budget!) with ever-grander fancies. I think this is happening all over the place: from postponed weddings to long-delayed dinner parties, it feels like vaccinations and warm weather are about to spring a major party boom.
If you share my personal twitchiness to pull out the napkins and porch cushions, but have forgotten how to cook for more than two at a time, let's talk party tricks.
Maybe my favorite party trick of all time is the upscale pizza party, where all you make is a double batch of pizza dough (or buy some from the grocery), a big salad, and an easy pretty cake. The guests bring beer and appetizers, then stand around to top their pizzas and grill them one by one. It's pretty, delicious, and just fun.
Another party trick is this Ottolenghi clementine chicken recipe; it's a highly glorified (and glorious) sheet pan dinner that you mix up in a big bowl, and roast all together. It makes your house smell amazing. Just add salad and a store-bought dessert.
Speaking of store-bought dessert, what's your favorite? I always think of my friend Abbey, who fed us a perfectly comforting home-cooked dinner then followed it with lush, enormous, yeast doughnuts from Dough for dessert. The best! I also remember the time I went to a dinner with Jeni Britton Bauer, who served ice cream "boards" (like a cheese board but better) of sliced-up pints with little groupings of toppings and whipped cream. The easiest thing, but so fancy and fun.
Or you could skip all this completely, call a friend and the sushi place down the road, sit on your front porch with cold sake and a tray of spicy tuna rolls between you while your kids run through the sprinkler. Eating with anyone outside of my family feels like a party right now, and I can hardly wait to do more of that.
A few more things I'm loving this week below, plus a few favorite pitcher drinks to bookmark for parties in your future.
Bring on the parties!
