How does income deprivation compare within local authorities in England?

Explore local income deprivation

Economic inequalities are not just regional, as we explored in this release on income and productivity, but can occur between neighbourhoods too.

This interactive article looks at levels of income deprivation (from the Indices of Multiple Deprivation), which is based on the proportion of people in an area who are out of work or on low earnings.

Across the measures shown in this article, we see it is generally urban local authorities with a higher level of overall income deprivation that have the greatest internal disparities. However, we also see several exceptions and that every local area has its own unique profile of income disparity.

Select your area for specific insights, data and visualisations for that local authority and how it compares to the rest of England.

This article uses one of a number of formats that we are developing to present data from the 2021 census. If you have 5 minutes to spare, please take the time to fill in this survey to give us your views.
