Statistics in Schools brings subjects to life using real-world Census Bureau data to create materials for use year after year at all grade levels. Celebrating May, the Statistical Way This month we celebrate all teachers, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage, Mother's Day and more with the Census Bureau's Statistics in Schools (SIS) easy-to-access, free activities and tools designed to supplement in-class and remote learning. Happy National Teachers Day (May 4) and Teacher Appreciation Week (May 3-7) Cheers to the nation's 6 million teachers dedicated to educating our K-12 students! We appreciate all that you do—whether you're teaching in-person, virtually or both ways. To show how much we care, we created the warm-up activity "Where Are the College Degrees?" to help jump-start your week. This activity lets students analyze the percentage of college degree attainment by geographic region from 2005 to 2019. | Teach Students About Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Do your students know there are approximately 22 million Asians and 1.4 million Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders in the United States? Discover more about this population group, like the percentage that have a bachelor's degree or their own businesses, by exploring our new Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Fun Facts handout. Use the accompanying teaching guide to find handout-based activities for students of all grades. | Thinking of the Perfect Gift to Give on Mother's Day? May 9th is the day we show appreciation to all the mothers out there. Use statistics to help decide on a special gift for mom. Did you know, for instance, that there are 12,048 florists and 16,914 greeting card publishers in the United States? Check out our Mother's Day Fun Facts to learn more key info about this occasion, such as the nation's total number of jewelry stores and the percentage of women who are mothers. | Take Your Students on a Virtual Scavenger Hunt! May 24th is National Scavenger Hunt Day. Can your class help us find our missing geographer? Using Statistics in Schools' "Scavenger Hunt: Where is Gina the Geographer?" elementary school activity, students use landmarks, weather, population and other statistical hints to track down her whereabouts. Here is the first clue to get you started, Gina does not like cold weather and is somewhere that's usually warm and rarely if ever gets snow. Which states could she be in? Follow the other clues to discover where she is. Ready, Set, Go! | |
