She guarded the recipe closely for years, but once I started cooking, she finally let me in on the secret: it was a Duncan Hines cake mix doctored up with instant vanilla pudding, butter, and lots of rum. I've always wanted to recreate her cake from scratch, so I came up with this version, which is honestly not much more work—and just as rich, moist, and generously rum-soaked as the original.
