On this day in 2002, the WNBA approved a move that quietly reshaped its future. The Utah Starzz, one of the league's original teams, were cleared to relocate from Salt Lake City to San Antonio after being purchased by Spurs Sports & Entertainment. What looked like a routine relocation would end up redirecting the entire arc of the franchise.

Reborn as the San Antonio Silver Stars, the team spent the next 15 years carving out its identity. There were ups and downs, but there were flashes, too, including a run to the 2008 WNBA Finals, that showed what this franchise could become with the right foundation. That path eventually led west in 2018, when the team moved again and emerged as the Las Vegas Aces. With new energy and direction, the Aces quickly grew into one of the league's strongest contenders.

In hindsight, December 5 wasn't just a date on the WNBA calendar. It was the first step in the long, winding journey that delivered the powerhouse we now know as the Las Vegas Aces.
