In accordance with a new state statute that takes effect this summer, the North Carolina Department of Labor has launched a website to support human trafficking prevention in the lodging and vacation rental industries.

Starting July 1, all lodging establishments and vacation rental property managers must ensure that employees and contractors involved in housekeeping, maintenance, check-in/check-out, or food and beverage service complete biannual department-approved human trafficking awareness training. Employers must also develop written reporting procedures and maintain compliance records.

The site offers free training, reporting guidance, required signage, and FAQs to assist with compliance.

"These new requirements empower hospitality workers with the knowledge and tools to recognize the signs of trafficking and respond responsibly," said Labor Commissioner Luke Farley.

Article Icon 1Highway Patrol Short on Troopers

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is experiencing some of its lowest enrollment rates ever, with nearly 200 open positions across the state going unfilled.

Thirty-one of those vacancies are in the state's 17 westernmost counties alone, where a population boom is exacerbating the problem.

In response, the Highway Patrol is implementing a recruitment program for the third time ever by offering recruits the full cadet rate while they attend basic training. This allows participants to receive benefits and begin contributing to their retirement immediately.

Lt. Josh Dowdle emphasized the broader mission beyond traffic stops: "The mission that we have given our troopers is to go out there and try to save lives."

Article Icon 1Duke Asked to End Wuhan Partnership

Two U.S. House committee chairmen have called on Duke University to end the operation of its joint Duke Kunshan University with Wuhan University in China, citing concerns that it promotes Chinese military and technological interests and jeopardizes national security.

Select Committee Chair Rep. John Moolenaar (R-Mich.) and House Education and Workforce Committee Chair Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) have written a letter to the president of Duke University alleging the partnership creates a "direct pipeline between U.S. innovation and China's military-industrial complex."

The partnership enrolls some 3,000 individuals and allows students to travel between the U.S. and China. The lawmakers noted several other universities, including Oakland University and the University of Michigan, have ended similar partnerships with Chinese institutions.
