Feds End Phoenix PD Probe

The U.S. Department of Justice dropped a civil rights investigation into the Phoenix Police Department and rescinded previous findings issued under the Biden administration.

The decision came as the Trump administration moved to end Biden-era investigations into several police departments across the nation.

"That means ending unjust investigations that have strayed from the facts and the law," said Timothy Courchaine, the U.S. Attorney for Arizona.

The move drew criticism from some civil rights groups, while Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said the decision won't change the city's police reform efforts.

Charges Filed in $60M Healthcare Scheme

Authorities filed charges against 20 people, a mental health company, and a church in a $60 million Medicaid fraud scheme tied to sober living homes.

The mental health company, Happy House Behavioral Health, is accused of paying sober living homes for referrals in violation of state law.

The company also allegedly billed the state for nonexistent or incomplete services, including on behalf of dead and imprisoned clients, and funneled $5 million to Hope of Life International Church, which then sent $2 million to an entity in Rwanda.

The charges include conspiracy, fraud, forgery, theft, and money laundering.

Public Input Sought on Speed Limits

The city of Phoenix wants public input on speed limits as city leaders consider potential changes to make streets safer.

A survey asks Phoenix residents for opinions about speed limits on city-maintained roads, excluding highways. Officials said they hope to collect input from motorists, bicycle riders, and pedestrians.

The survey comes after council members approved funding to reinstall speeding and red light cameras this year.

Arizona Department of Transportation statistics show speeding is a contributing factor in nearly one out of three Arizona crashes.
