President Signs Take It Down Act

The bipartisan Take It Down Act, which was introduced by Rep. Maria Salazar (R-Miami) in the House, was signed Monday by President Donald Trump in a Rose Garden ceremony with First Lady Melania Trump, who championed the legislation.

The act bans the nonconsensual online publication of sexually explicit images and videos, both authentic and computer-generated.

Salazar said the act "will finally give innocent victims real protection from online exploitation." She added that the owners of websites like Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok will face consequences if illegal images are not removed within 48 hours.

"Artificial intelligence and social media are the digital candy for the next generation," the first lady said. "... but unlike sugar, these new technologies can be weaponized, shape beliefs and, sadly, affect emotions and even be deadly."

Guana Land Swap Proposal Withdrawn

Facing opposition from some citizens and prominent politicians, the private company attempting to acquire a piece of northeast Florida conservation land has withdrawn its proposal.

The state was prepared to deed 600 acres of the Guana River Wildlife Management Area of St. Johns County to Upland LLC in exchange for 3,000 private acres.

Upland withdrew its application ahead of an Acquisition and Restoration Council vote, citing "public sentiment resulting from misinformation."

Critics, including President Donald Trump's chief of staff, Susie Wiles, feared the public parcel would be developed. Upland maintained that the 5-to-1 swap would have been a net conservation benefit, with no development intentions, assuring the land would remain conserved and better maintained under their stewardship.
