Happy Mother's Day! How special to have an opportunity to wish all of you here in our community a blessed Mother's Day. You are mothers, grandmothers, godmothers, aunts, spiritual mothers, mother-friends, sharing mother-love with your people so generously. We are deeply grateful for your presence in the world and in our lives. It is a mother's gifts that very often inspire us to share love in the form of food from our own hands, carrying on your legacies with others. In this way, your love fills tables and hearts far and wide. We love you back, and we thank you!
Me with my mom, and my grandmothers Alice Elum Abowd and Sarah Deeb Abood.
As you get into your day today, I'll share a last-minute idea for a very quick and easy Stuffed Dates recipe. Fill pitted medjool dates with almonds, give them a quick sauté in a tiny bit of olive oil, then season with a shower of lime zest and flakey sea salt. Here's the recipe, and here's the story I wrote along with it that highlights my California dreamin' with none other than Chuck Williams, founder of Williams-Sonoma.
Scroll down for a menu for this week that stars my delicious Beef Shawarma with the trimmings.
Then for the week ahead, we are going all-in on hummus. I don't get too inspired by all of the days marked for various foods throughout the year, but Tuesday is National Hummus Day. And boy do we love our hummus, don't we?! I'll send tips and recipes this week to keep excellent hummus happening on our tables, plus we're holding a HUMMMUS SALE with 20% OFF on everything you find here. Use code EATHUMMUS25 at check out.
Bless your hands, and bless you, Mothers, with every protection and joy!
Beef Shawarma.
This is a buffet-style meal, where you put all of the trimmings and sauce and bread (or big lettuce leaves) out and make your plates from there. So wonderfully flavorful!
Here is an instance where homemade FAR outshines any commercially purchased pickle. My recipe has us pickle these beauties in large chunks so they stay crunchy. You can cut them into strips to serve as part of a wrap, as with beef shawarma.
The sauces can really make the meal, no?! This one is simple and comes out smooth and saucy as in this photo, when you follow my easy recipe. Plus, our incredibly good tahini is on sale with code EATHUMMUS25
So much fun! I can't wait to get even deeper into pita-making with you in my new baking book. The puff and softness are a joy. Great for your Beef Shawarma meal.
