Hola Amigos!
I wanted to share a brief update after the large-scale power outage that affected millions of people in Spain, Portugal, and parts of France.
My family and I were right in the middle of it here in Barcelona. We were totally fine—but wow, what a strange experience.
| | I've been through plenty of power outages before, but this one hit differently. ❤️ |
There was a complete loss of cell coverage and an overall feeling of being completely cut off from the world.
No calls or texts, no news, no internet—just totally in the dark (literally and figuratively).
We also didn't have running water.
The power went out around noon and didn't come back until the early morning hours.
I mostly kept thinking about people stuck in subways, on trains hours from home, in traffic jams throughout the city with no working street lights, and everyone else just trying to figure out what was going on without access to any information. Pretty wild.
For us, it wasn't awful (my husband and I were both working from home when it happened, and our kids' school is nearby), but it was a solid wake-up call.
Here are a few takeaways that I think are worth sharing in case you ever go through something similar:
1. ⭐️Always keep some cash at home—**especially small bills. With ATMs and card readers down, people were scrambling.
2. Store extra water. Even a few big bottles tucked away can make a huge difference.💦
3. Keep a radio or walkie-talkies. Without cell service or Wi-Fi, we had no idea what was going on. A basic emergency radio would have been extremely helpful!📻
4. Flashlights (and extra batteries). Battery-powered lanterns and flashlights are your best friend when your phone battery is dying and you can't charge anything.🔦
5. Food that doesn't need cooking is key. We were lucky to have our little propane gas burner, so I still made our planned dinner (Thai Basil Chicken!). But if we hadn't, it would have been a cold, canned beans kind of night. 😂
Here are some easy no-cook or low-cook meal ideas to keep in mind:
| | you can freeze this recipe for up to 3 months. I also like ALOHA brand organic protein bars |
| | I will have this type of snack on hand all the time!😅 Check out all of our snack recipes- most are freezer-friendly! |
So... WHAT exactly happened?
There hasn't been much of an explanation, which seems to open the door for conspiracy theories! haha
We've only been informed that a disconnection occurred in the European transmission network, which may have been triggered by weather or another technical failure.🤨
I'm so grateful we were safe and that it didn't last longer!
However, it reminded us how quickly things can change—and how a little preparation can go a long way.🥰
