Mitarashi Dango
Indulge in the sweet and savory delight of mitarashi dango! These bouncy and chewy sweet dumplings are grilled and coated with a sweet soy sauce glaze. I shared this recipe a while ago but have just updated it with step by step instructions to make it super easy to make!
Kumquats, or 'kinkan' in Japanese, are both sweet and tart making them perfect for marmalade. This delicious homestyle marmalade reminds me of what my mother used to make when I was growing up since we lived in a citrus producing area of Japan. It's bursting with citrus flavour and has a sweet and tangy flavour that works for many different foods like toast, yoghurt, pastries, and desserts.
The cosy and wholesome goodness of sweet potato rice is what I need when the weather gets cold! This little side dish captures the flavours of autumn/winter season in Japan perfectly. It's a great way to add more veggies to your meal and make plain rice more flavourful. Try it paired with grilled chicken, teriyaki fish, and many other meals.
The Japanese tradition of hanging persimmons/kaki out to dry creates this delicious dried fruit called Hoshigaki. These hand-crafted dried persimmons take some patience and work since they have to be carefully peeled and hung to dry for weeks and gently massaged to concentrate their natural sugars but the process is easy and worth it! The hoshigaki turn out so deliciously sweet like candy with a chewy softness. They're perfect as a luxurious snack or a sophisticated addition to cheese boards.
My name is Shihoko. I moved to Australia many years ago from Japan and I missed the food so much that I decided to create my favourite recipes at home and share them with you too.
