Good Morning! On this day in 1896, an explosion at the Vulcan Mine in Garfield County killed 49 miners, becoming one of the deadliest mine disasters in state history. The Colorado Springs Gazette reported that the explosion was so large "the town of New Castle was shaken as if by an earthquake."

Storm Causes Fatal Crashes

Adverse travel conditions caused by last week's storm resulted in a series of fatal crashes over the holiday weekend, with at least seven collisions and eight deaths since Friday.

Two of the deadly crashes occurred on Valentine's Day. Two others took place in Adams County on Saturday and Sunday, leading to one arrest for careless driving resulting in death.

Colorado State Patrol (CSP) also reported four different cruiser vehicles were struck in non-fatal collisions, either while stopping motorists or closing lanes due to previous crashes.

With weather advisories in place through this morning, CSP is urging motorists to use extra caution and take warnings seriously.

Colorado GOP Sues Members for 'Coup'

The Colorado Republican Party is suing six state party members who instigated a failed "coup" last summer by attempting to oust Chairman Dave Williams.

According to the lawsuit, Williams' rivals undertook "a series of unethical, dishonorable, and fraudulent actions designed to cling to power," costing the party $100,000 in legal fees and sowing chaos weeks before the presidential election.

This litigation is the most recent in a longstanding dispute between "old" and "new" factions of the Colorado GOP, which at one point saw Williams and his opponent, Eli Bremer, simultaneously claiming to be Chairman.

With the party's biennial reorganization taking place next month, Brita Horn, contender for party chair and one of the suit's defendants, says it won't deter her from a goal of "uniting the Colorado Republican Party."

Lawmakers Urge USFS Reinstatement

Colorado lawmakers are urging the U.S. Department of Agriculture to reinstate 3,400 U.S. Forest Service (USFS) employees who were laid off last week.

The layoffs were in accordance with Executive Order 14210: The Department of Government Efficiency 'Workforce Optimization Initiative,' aimed at reducing government workforce expenses.

In a joint statement issued Friday, state senators and representatives claimed the reductions combined with the existing hiring freeze will put undue strain on the already-understaffed USFS, which manages 11.3 million acres of Colorado land.

Some lawmakers are also seeking hiring freeze exemptions for critical positions like wildland firefighters and public safety personnel to prevent disruptions in wildfire response efforts.
