Central Virginia is the fastest-growing part of the Commonwealth. New Kent County added 14.4% to its population in the last five years, while Goochland County added 13.9%, and Chesterfield, Hanover, and Henrico counties, along with the city of Richmond, also reported significant population growth.

The rapid growth is driving up real estate prices across the region. Richmond has landed on two national lists of the hottest property markets. Last year, the median price for a single-family home reached $424,000, up from $300,000 in 2020.

Prices are soaring in other cities, as well. In Virginia Beach, the median home price has increased by more than $150,000 over the past decade. Other cities in the Hampton Roads area show similar price jumps.

The three areas with the fastest price increases in the state are all in Northern Virginia. Dunn Loring, Waterford, and McLean topped the list.

Two minor earthquakes shook the Richmond area within hours of each other, though no damage was reported from either event.

"It felt like something landed on the roof," one resident said about Tuesday's quake, which had a magnitude of 2.8 and could be felt as far north as Front Royal.

The second earthquake was centered in the same general vicinity—the Wyndham area of Henrico County, north and west of the capital. Wednesday's quake had a magnitude of 2.3.

The U.S. Geological Survey noted that earthquakes happen occasionally in every state. This week's tremors were far less severe than the 5.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the same region in 2011, which caused damage as far away as Washington, D.C.
