In 2017, Florida manatees were reclassified from endangered to threatened status. Environmentalists have since argued that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service should restore Florida manatees to endangered status due to ongoing threats to their population. A mass starvation event occurred in 2021 and 2022, which led to a record number of Florida's manatees dying. Statewide, 565 manatees died last year, a number experts call average.
