Dozens of residents displaced by Hurricane Helene reached out to North Carolina Senators Ted Budd and Thom Tillis Tuesday, stating they were kicked out of hotels or motels, despite FEMA extending Transitional Sheltering Assistance through Jan. 25.

Budd posted on X, "This needs to be fixed TONIGHT," while Tillis called it a "total breakdown on the part of FEMA" and credited several nonprofits that paid for victims to stay in hotels with giving FEMA "another day to get its act together."

FEMA later stated survivors who felt their TSA eligibility ended in error should call the agency's helpline.

FEMA also announced it will provide rental assistance to displaced residents who apply for it in the 63 counties affected by Helene, and that current eligible North Carolinians "can remain in their lodging through the end of March 2025," according to an agency post.

Article Icon 1Foxx Named Rules Committee Chair

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson selected North Carolina Republican Congresswoman Virginia Foxx, NC-05, to chair the U.S. House Committee on Rules. Her selection was ratified by the House Republican conference Tuesday morning.

Foxx succeeds retired Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Texas. She was chosen over contenders such as Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas; Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas; and Rep. Michelle Fischbach, R-Minn.

The Rules Committee is considered critical, with the chair responsible for controlling the narrow Republican majority's tone and maintaining caucus unity. Foxx will be the only female committee chair in the 119th Congress.

Article Icon 1Data Breach Impacts Schools Statewide

Last month's PowerSchool data breach impacted all North Carolina public schools using the student information system "to some degree," according to the Department of Public Instruction.

The cloud-based data management program for K-12 school systems in nearly 100 countries, including the U.S., claims all data was "contained and destroyed." Hackers acquired names, addresses, birth dates, and social security numbers from Dec. 18 to Dec. 29.

PowerSchool didn't notify school systems until more than two weeks after the breach had occurred.

DPI hasn't released specific numbers other than to say the breach involved fewer than 1,000 North Carolina students' social security data being leaked, with more teachers impacted than students.
