Numerous school systems across Middle and Eastern Tennessee experienced closures or delays due to snow and ice on Tuesday.

Numerous school systems across Middle and Eastern Tennessee experienced closures or delays due to snow and ice on Tuesday.

Eastern parts of the state experienced frigid conditions Monday night into Tuesday, with temperatures plunging into the low 20s. Higher elevations in the region also experienced snow accumulation Monday night.

Several roads were closed in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park due to icy conditions, including Newfound Gap Road between Gatlinburg and Cherokee, North Carolina, Little River Road, and Lakeview Drive.

Multiple vehicle accidents were also reported due to ice and slippery roadways.

The Secretary of State's office announced a historic voter turnout for the 2024 general election, with more than 3.08 million Tennesseans casting their ballots.

This includes a record-breaking 2.13 million votes cast in person during the early voting period, surpassing previous highs set in 2020.

We are encouraged by the record number of voters who participated and made their voices heard, and we hope this upward trend in voter engagement continues in future elections,” Secretary of State Tre Hargett stated.

In the election, President-elect Donald Trump and JD Vance won Tennessee's eleven Electoral College votes.

Legendary singer Brenda Lee received special recognition Monday for her iconic holiday hit Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.

The song, which Lee recorded in Nashville at the age of 13, has officially been declared Tennessee's official holiday song. 

Rep. Jason Powell, who authored the legislation, joined Gov. Bill Lee in honoring the 79-year-old artist during a ceremony at the state’s Capitol.

In December 2023, Lee’s song reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, making Lee the oldest artist to reach the top spot. Listen to the song here.
