| 'Raise the Age' Amendment Takes Effect As of Dec. 1, individuals ages 16 to 17 who commit felonies in class A through E are immediately being charged as adults, thanks to a state law amendment now in effect. Class A through E felonies include crimes such as armed robberies, serious assault, or shooting into occupied homes. "These are not childish acts and threaten the safety of the community," police said. The Raise the Age law in North Carolina was initially passed in 2019 as a way to reduce recidivism among the state's youth population, but the jurisdiction process could be very time-consuming. It will now be expedited. The North Carolina legislature passed the amendment in June. It was vetoed by Gov. Roy Cooper, but his veto was overridden. | Bitter Temps Blast NC North Carolina is getting hit with a blast of Arctic air today that could last into Wednesday. It will be followed by another round of cold temps in a weather pattern expected to last 6-10 days. At the same time, a weak disturbance in the atmosphere may be enough to produce snow flurries in western counties and the Triad overnight. Highs will range between 40 and 45, with lows in the upper teens to low 20s. The windchill effect will make it feel even colder. Temps are below historical North Carolina lows and highs this time of year, which typically range from the mid-30s to upper 50s. Warming centers, also known as White Flag shelters, will be open for homeless populations in some parts of the state. | Organic Eggs and Cucumbers Recalled Organic eggs sold in 25 Costco stores in five southern states—including North Carolina—have been recalled for potential salmonella contamination. Additional states impacted include Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The recall involved nearly 11,000 cartons of 24-count organic eggs sold under Costco's Kirkland Signature brand. Cucumbers from Arizona company SunFed Produce sold Oct. 12-Nov. 26 at some Walmart, Wegmans, and Albertsons stores may have also been contaminated with salmonella. The cucumbers were recalled after sickening 68 people—including 18 who were hospitalized—in 19 states. FDA investigators say people who bought cucumbers during that window should check with the store where they purchased them to see if that produce is part of the recall.
