Georgia Power customers may face a rate increase after Hurricane Helene caused over $1 billion in damage, depleting the company’s storm recovery account.

The proposed rate increase would replenish Georgia Power's storm recovery account, which covered damages from all storms from the year, not just Hurricane Helene.

Customers experienced a 12% rate increase last year, raising a typical residential bill by nearly $16 a month.

Officials say Hurricane Helene was the most destructive storm in Georgia Power's history, requiring unprecedented repairs to downed power lines and damaged infrastructure.

The NWS advises residents to take precautions to protect exposed pipes, vulnerable populations—including children, the elderly, and the homeless—and outdoor pets.

A late-night traffic stop turned violent Saturday when gunfire broke out between state troopers and a suspect.

After troopers attempted to stop two vehicles racing on I-20, the vehicles exited onto Sigman Road, where one vehicle stopped in a convenience store parking lot.

During the encounter, gunfire was exchanged, injuring one suspect, who was transported to Grady Hospital. Another suspect was arrested nearby. One trooper sustained minor injuries, while another escaped unharmed.

Investigators are working to determine the events that led to the shooting.
