Article Icon 1Teens Arrested After Escaping Detention Center

Three teenagers escaped from a Granbury juvenile detention center and led authorities on a multi-county chase Sunday evening, prompting a nearby school district to cancel classes Monday as a safety precaution.

The boys, aged 15 and 16, injured two guards before stealing a vehicle and firearms and robbing a gas station in Dublin. After stealing another vehicle, they led police on a chase to Lancaster and Hutchins, where they fled on foot and were eventually apprehended.

Morgan Mill ISD, located about 20 miles west of Granbury, canceled classes Monday after consulting with the Erath County Sheriff's Office.

News outlets published the juveniles' names and photos while they were on the run but withheld that information after they were captured.

Article Icon 1Student Death Prompts Calls For Action

A town hall meeting was held Saturday morning in East Houston to address concerns about a railroad crossing where 15-year-old Milby High School student Sergio Rodriguez was struck and killed by a train while walking to school last Monday.

Sergio's parents filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Union Pacific Railroad and the train operator on Tuesday. Witnesses reported that the student tripped while trying to cross the tracks in an undesignated area. Union Pacific claimed he "made a tragic decision to try and outrun a moving train."

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and Houston Mayor John Whitmire have supported calls for Union Pacific to pay for a pedestrian bridge over the high-traffic crossing.

At the meeting, U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-Houston) urged action to prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future. "We have to continue to work together to make sure this doesn't happen again and no child is injured or harmed in any way crossing the tracks," she said.

After witnessing the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, Gholson native Caleb Fisher moved his family to North Carolina to assist with disaster recovery efforts.

"We were only here, I think it was five days, and I just had that same crazy burning urge to come back and help as much as we could. The good Lord's blessed us with the opportunity to be able to," he shared.

Fisher made the journey to North Carolina with his wife and their four kids in their camper earlier this month. They are volunteering with Red Truck Men, a local nonprofit organization.

Months after the storm ravaged the area, Fisher said there is still a lot of work to do. "Major bridges washed out, major roads are washed out, houses are still stuffed up in trees. There are still vehicles strewn everywhere," he said.

Somalia is facing a devastating combination of natural disasters, global conflicts, widespread poverty, and disease outbreaks. East Africa has just endured its worst drought in 40 years, leaving tens of millions without access to clean water, wiping out millions of livestock, and destroying crops. With domestic food production crippled, Somalia has relied heavily on imports—90% of its wheat coming from Russia and Ukraine—until those shipments stopped.

Now, two in five children in Somalia suffer from acute malnutrition, and cholera is spreading in some regions. The food crisis, compounded by global humanitarian aid being redirected to Europe and the Middle East, has created a perfect storm, leading to a sharp rise in child malnutrition.
