Article Icon 1GOP Criticizes Denver Immigration Policies

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston is drawing criticism for his response to President-elect Trump's proposed mass deportation policies.

In a November interview, Johnston warned that federal immigration enforcement in Denver could lead to a "Tiananmen Square moment," suggesting that residents would physically block federal agents.

The Denver Post editorial board admonished Johnston for "recklessly elevating" rhetoric and urged a "smart resistance" that avoids violent confrontation.

Denver has experienced a significant influx of migrants, with approximately 45,000 arrivals since December 2022. The city has spent around $356 million on migrant services, averaging $7,900 per individual, which constitutes about 8% of Denver's 2025 budget.

Article Icon 1Colorado Goes Cage-Free with Egg Law

Starting Jan. 1, all eggs sold in Colorado must come from cage-free hens under a 2020 law designed to improve animal welfare.

The law’s first phase, already in effect, requires hens to have more usable space to qualify for sale in the state. Starting in 2025, the law will also mandate cage-free housing systems with specific space requirements for hens.

Egg producers that don’t meet these standards will be prohibited from selling their eggs in the state. Producers must also pass annual audits and obtain state certification to comply.

Consumers should expect higher egg prices, with cage-free eggs averaging 73 cents more per dozen, according to the USDA.

Article Icon 1Low-Flying Helicopters to Survey Wildlife

Starting today, low-flying helicopters will likely be visible near Fort Collins over the next six weeks as Colorado Parks and Wildlife conducts its annual survey of deer and elk herds along the Front Range.

These flights help biologists monitor herd sizes, sex ratios, and calf reproduction rates to assess population health. The collected data will inform decisions on hunting license allocations and herd management plans.

With Colorado hosting the world’s largest elk population (280,000) and around 376,000 deer, maintaining healthy herds is vital for ecology and the state’s $834 million hunting industry. See an example of the aerial photography here.
