Households in wealthier states tend to carry higher balances but are often able to pay them off more quickly. Conversely, households in poorer states face prolonged repayment periods. For those making only minimum payments, it would take at least 17 years to fully pay off the national average debt of $6,140. Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and Alabama have the longest payoff timelines, while Massachusetts, California, Minnesota, and New Hampshire have the shortest.
