How to explore Greek cuisine while sailing on a private yacht

By Binita Shah-Patel on November 1, 2024

If you're planning to sail the Greek seas on a private yacht, you're in for more than just stunning views and hidden coves.

Greece is a culinary wonderland, where ancient recipes and fresh ingredients combine to create unforgettable flavours. From island to island, you'll find dishes and delicacies that reflect each area's unique character.

Embarking on a yacht charter provides an unmatched opportunity to experience these flavours at your own pace, both on board and ashore.

Below, we share how to make your gastronomic adventure as memorable as the seascapes you'll explore.

Savour local dishes on board

Before setting sail, visit a market to stock up on quintessentially Greek ingredients. Salads, tzatziki and olives make easy and refreshing starters for any meal, while you can cook simple yet iconic mains like souvlaki or grilled fish on the yacht's barbeque.

If you have a chef on board, consider discussing a custom menu inspired by native ingredients. A skilled chef will be able to introduce you to lesser-known dishes, like Cretan dakos or Santorini's famed fava, making every meal a culinary journey.

Stop at restaurants

Many islands, especially those less travelled, host tavernas where locals gather for fresh, hearty meals. Look for places where families gather, as they often serve traditional recipes passed down through generations. For example, a waterfront taverna in Mykonos would be the perfect place to try moussaka or kleftiko, a lamb dish slow-cooked in parchment.

You'll find that local chefs love to share their stories and even recommend their favourite spots. Don't shy away from venturing beyond the main tourist areas to discover the authentic, rustic charm of Greek dining.

Try the catch of the day

The Mediterranean offers an abundance of seafood, and local fishermen bring in the freshest catch each morning. When you're in a harbour town, visit a fish market and ask the vendor about the best fish for grilling on board. If you're feeling adventurous, try octopus or calamari, which you can easily prepare with a sprinkle of sea salt and a splash of lemon juice.

Some island tavernas will even let you choose your fish straight from the day's catch, preparing it in traditional Greek style with herbs and olive oil. Enjoy it with a side of horta (wild greens) or a simple salad for a true taste of the islands.

Sample regional produce

Each island has its own special produce and gastronomic identity. While in Naxos, try the local potatoes, which are celebrated for their flavour and used in everything from stews to salads. The island of Syros is famous for its loukoumi (Turkish delight), whereas Chios is known for its mastiha, a resin used in sweets, spirits and savoury dishes.

During your yacht journey, pick up small samples from local producers to enjoy on board or take home. You'll find that each island's produce contributes to the country's vast, varied cuisine.

Chartering a private yacht provides you with a gateway to Greece's rich culinary world, enabling you to savour the diverse flavours of the archipelago, island by island.
