Less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene, Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall as a Category 3 storm somewhere along our west coast and travel across the state. Floridians are rushing to prepare. You can read more in our top story.

Hurricane Milton Headed Toward Florida

Tropical Storm Milton became a hurricane Sunday as it strengthened in the Gulf of Mexico. It's expected to make landfall on Wednesday somewhere along the West Coast of Florida as a major hurricane.

Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 51 counties, including all of Central Florida.

The National Hurricane Center said Milton will intensify into a major Category 3 storm with 120 mph winds as it makes landfall.

Mandatory evacuations are in effect for vulnerable areas, and officials are urging residents to take the threat seriously and prepare for impacts such as flooding, power outages, and road closures.

“I highly encourage you to evacuate” if you’re in an evacuation zone, said Kevin Guthrie, executive director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management. “We are preparing... for the largest evacuation that we have seen, most likely since 2017.”

Volusia Sends Help to North Carolina

A social media post inspired a community effort in Volusia County that gathered more than 1,000 pounds of supplies to help people in North Carolina affected by Hurricane Helene.

Katie McCafferty, who runs the community Instagram page @WeLovePortOrange, obtained a list of needed items from a nonprofit on the ground and put out a call on social media.

A local pilot, Mike Partovi, offered to fly supplies on his plane, and the owners of Alberto’s restaurant volunteered it as a drop-off spot. Other businesses quickly joined, and locals immediately responded with enough supplies to fill the plane at least four times.

“It hits home for us because we’ve experienced flooding, trees in our home—so for us, we get it, we want to send as much as we can,” said McCafferty.

Florida Airports Top Rankings

Florida airports earned the top spot in three of eight categories in USA Today’s 10Best lists of airports and airport amenities in the U.S. An expert panel nominated their top picks, and then readers voted for their favorites.

Blu2o at Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) ranked No. 1 in the Best Airport Bar category.

Cigar City Brewing at Tampa International Airport (TPA) (No. 8) and Cask & Larder at Orlando International Airport (MCO) (No. 3) both made the Best Airport Sit-Down Restaurant list.

TPA ranked as the Best Airport for Dining, with MCO ranking No. 3. MCO also ranked No. 3 among the best airports for shopping.

TPA was named Best Large Airport, with MCO ranking No. 4. American Airlines Flagship Lounge at Miami International Airport (MIA) ranked No. 7 on the Best Airport Lounges list.
