| Dockworkers' Strike Shuts Down Major PortsDockworkers' strike shut down major U.S. ports on Tuesday. The 45,000-strong walkout threatens product shortages and higher prices ahead of the holiday shopping season. The White House is urging negotiations but says President Joe Biden doesn't plan to intervene, despite warnings from business groups that a strike could cost the economy an estimated $5 billion per day. The International Longshoremen's Association and employer group United States Maritime Alliance are at an impasse over wages and automation at 36 ports that handle about half of the nation's cargo. Many retailers have rushed to import holiday merchandise early, but a prolonged strike would disrupt supply chains as the Christmas season approaches. | U.S. Sends More Troops to MideastThe Pentagon announced on Monday that it will deploy thousands of additional U.S. troops, including fighter jet squadrons, to the Middle East to defend Israel, bringing the total U.S. forces in the region to around 43,000. President Biden initially denied Sunday that the U.S. was planning to send more troops to the Middle East, but the situation changed as Israel began limited strikes across the border into Lebanon Monday. The Israeli military said its targets were located in villages close to the border that posed "an immediate threat to Israeli communities in northern Israel." It said its air force and artillery were helping with "precise strikes." | Baseball Legend Pete Rose DiesFormer Cincinnati Reds superstar Pete Rose, who retired as the sport’s all-time leader in hits before being banned from the sport forever, died Monday at 83. Rose, whose nickname was "Charlie Hustle," finished his career with 4,256 hits, the most in baseball history. He and Ty Cobb are the only two players to ever surpass 4,000 hits. He also holds the record for games played, plate appearances and at-bats. The end of his career came swiftly when evidence arose that he was betting on baseball games. He received a lifetime ban in 1989 and was jailed for several months for tax evasion.
That ban also made him ineligible for induction into baseball's Hall of Fame, a decision that remains controversial to this day. Let us know what you think in today's Poll below.
