I'm Richa, the face behind My Food Story. Welcome to this series where I send you an email exclusive tip/recipe every Wednesday! Here's today's Tip/Kitchen Hack: Aluminum foil is probably one of the most versatile kitchen tools there is. Use it as a conductor for heat, a light reflector, to wrap leftovers and even to clean your silverware! While there are a number of ways to use aluminum foil, here are 3 things you should never do with it: - Toss it away after just One use - That's right, depending on how you used it, most aluminum foil is easily reusable! If you've used it to wrap food, line a baking tray or cover containers, you can definitely reuse it. Carefully open it out and lay it on the counter, flatten it out to the best you can and wipe it down with a damp cloth (only if necessary) and reuse it as many times as possible. Just remember to clean it before reusing it on food as there are chances of contaminating it. It's also dishwasher friendly, so one wash and it's as good as new
- Do not put it in the Microwave - An obvious one, I know, but I learnt this the hard way by lighting a microwave on fire while trying to heat up a slice of brownie that was covered in foil 🙈🙈. Microwaves produce electromagnetic waves that pass through the container to heat up the food inside it. But these waves can't pass through aluminum foil, and instead they bounce off of it - causing it to spark, and potentially light a microwave on fire!
- Do not use it for Acidic foods - As you may already know, acidic foods can break down the covering of the foil and cause aluminum to leach into your food. Acidic foods like tomatoes or even foods with high salt or spice or lemon content can cause the foil to break down. So the next time you are roasting tomatoes in the oven, remember not to cover it or line the tray with foil!
BONUS TIP - Did you know that you can sharpen your scissors using aluminum foil? Here's how - Take a large piece of foil and fold it in half at least 6-8 times. Use the scissors to make some cuts on the foil, and your scissors will be noticeably sharper! Hope this helps!! Is there anything else you need help with? Reply and tell me and I'll make sure to include it in my next few emails. | |
