June Monthly Highlights

This month, the U.S. Census Bureau's Statistics in Schools (SIS) program is providing lots of free, fun, easy-to-access activities and tools to help you celebrate the high school graduation season, National Camping Month, Father's Day, and more with your students!

High School Graduation

Hats Off to 2021 High School Graduates!

It's time for graduating seniors to celebrate their achievements and plan their futures. As they open a new chapter in their lives, what's next? College? Vocational school? There were over eight million full-time students enrolled at four-year full-time colleges in 2019 and nearly four million enrolled in vocational courses in 2018.

Understanding the correlation between higher education and employment may inspire the class of 2021 to pursue a college degree or technical training beyond high school. Explore this math activity with your high school students that focuses on unemployment rates by educational attainment. Students will have an opportunity to create scatter plots, analyze visual data, calculate correlation coefficients, and identify and evaluate influential points.

Camping

It's National Camping Month!

Did you know Thomas Hiram Holding, a British tailor, popularized camping in the 1800s? Inspired by his outdoor adventures as a young boy traveling the Western United States by wagon train, he went on to design modernized camping equipment.

California led all states in having 470 discount department stores that sold camping and backpacking equipment in 2007. This middle school activity teaches students to calculate five-number summaries and create and interpret box plots using historic economic census data. Enjoy the great outdoors this summer!

National Children's Day

National Children's Day: June 13

Children are a treasure! So how much time do we spend with our little gems? According to the U.S. Census Bureau's Survey of Income and Program Participation, 81 percent of children ate dinner with a parent at least five days per week in 2014. The survey also found that 47 percent of boys and 36 percent of girls participated in a sport. Did you cheer them on during practice or competition?

Celebrate this National Children's Day with our elementary school activity that looks at the visualization "A Child's Day." It provides an interesting glimpse into children's participation in academic programs and extracurricular activities and helps students draw comparisons to their class.
