You “can’t” or you “don’t really want to”?

Which is it?

Hey there,

One day, we say, we're going to live a beautiful life. The best life.

We're going to wake up at the best time every morning, do the best workouts, eat the best foods, and do the best things with the best people.

One day, we say, we're going to lose that belly fat, learn that instrument, get that corner office, write that poem about the goat that shtupped the pumpkin.

The kicker, though, is that day will never come because it's always tomorrow, next week, next year, next lifetime.

There are always excuses why today isn't that day.

Here's the rub, though:

Whenever we say, "I would do X, but I can't because Y," it's almost always BS unless Y is "I don't really want to."

Because that's what most everything in life really comes down to: necessity. The mother of all invention, the tonic that makes even the timid brave.

When we lie to ourselves and say otherwise, what we're really saying is that we prefer alibis over achievements, expedience over excellence, and comfort over challenge.

We do this because excuses are seductive. They promise freedom from pain, embarrassment, and failure. They lull us into letting ourselves off the hook with a pinky swear that soon we'll stir the stumps. Maybe even Tomorrow™.

The world loves to offer us excuses, too, like so many lotus-eaters looking for gaping maws to ladle their nectar into.

There's a Teen Mom marathon on MTV. And there's a two-for-one deal on double-stuffed Pizza Rolls. And didn't you hear? There's a murderous monsoon in Myanmar, too!

The excuse is a succubus, though. It soothes our soul but saps our spirit. While we're ensconced in its bosom, we never feel its fangs.

So think twice before you say "I can't."

I can't get into the gym a few days per week, or I don't really want to?

I can't stop double-fisting Doritos, or I don't really want to?

I can't ditch fast food for home-cooked meals, or I don't really want to?

The truth hurts sometimes, but remember: the more uncomfortable the activity, the more likely it'll lead to growth.
