Welcome to day 1 of 5 days of Japanese Cooking made Simple!

 

Our first lesson is about 6 Simple condiments used in Japanese cooking.

5 out of the 46 Japanese language sounds, Sa, Shi, Su, Se, So lines is a pun of 5 basic seasonings of Japaneses cooking. 

 

Sa for Satō = Sugar and also Sake 

Shi for Shio = Salt

Su for Su = Rice Vinegar

Se for Syōyu (correct reading of Kanji character is Se u yu hence Se refers Soy Sauce

So for Miso = fermented soy beans

 

I know, even just these 6 condiments might be hard to find where you live.

 

So tomorrow, I will teach you substitutions for difficult to obtain Japanese ingredients.
