May 27, 2021 No. 34 In a few weeks, our family is going on our longest road trip yet, and I admit I have some trepidation about tears, tantrums, gnawing hunger pains — and that's just from me. As in any time of uncertainty, I turned to other parents for their advice — and they had a lot of tips to offer. —Thao
Six years ago, the first road trip my husband and I took as new parents was a journey from the San Francisco Bay Area to Southern Oregon. Our 1-year-old had always been generally happy riding in the car, but she chose this opportunity to scream every 15 minutes. It was the longest seven hours of our lives.
Over the years, we've learned a few helpful tricks. Unlike that first road trip, when we made just one stop, we now plan for lots of stops at cool detours along the route. Here are 10 road trips around the United States that start or end in well-known destinations and offer loads of stops along the way. So pack your bags, pick up some Dramamine, and hit that open road. cubby finds: go, go, go! ask maxwell Is it better to travel during the day (have to entertain kids, stop for bathrooms), or travel during the night so kids sleep? But then at least one parent has some serious adjustment to their sleep once they arrive. —Cathy Dear Cathy,
Yes! It's road trip time finally after over a year of being stuck at home, so thanks for the question. I hope I can be helpful here, but I do want to say that any good answer could be very different for different families. BUT THE MAIN THING IS ... first figure out what makes YOU feel really good when traveling and build your kid's routine around that. The challenge with travel and kids is when us adults don't feel rested or comfortable and THEN we have to deal with our kids. They will always throw us for a bit of a loop (that's their job :)) so knowing what works best for you and your partner is primary. As they say at the beginning of every flight, "Parents, put your own mask on first." Maxwell Ryan is a father and was an elementary school teacher in NYC before founding Apartment Therapy.
