Updates to the roadmap out of lockdown Schools will be able to relax some COVID-19 restrictions next week after the government announced the country's roadmap out of lockdown is on track and Step 3 will go ahead as planned on 17 May. We have updated guidance for schools and further education settings with details of the changes, including face coverings, domestic school trips, wraparound provision and extracurricular activity and exam cohort attendance and provision. Education staff wellbeing charter launched We've worked with unions, schools and colleges and Mind to co-create a charter to highlight staff wellbeing in the education sector. It's a tool for schools and colleges to create, and publicly commit to, their own wellbeing strategies to help them protect, promote and enhance the wellbeing and mental health of their staff. You can use the charter to: - show staff that you take their wellbeing seriously
- open a conversation with staff about their wellbeing and mental health
- create a staff wellbeing strategy
- create a wellbeing-focused culture
More mental health support for pupils The next few months will be crucial in supporting pupils' mental health and wellbeing as they recover from the pandemic. We've announced increased funding, specialist support and training materials for expert care to help, including: - funding to train a senior mental health lead from their staff in the next academic year which will be offered to up to 7,800 schools and colleges in England. We aim to offer to all state schools and colleges by 2025.
- free expert training, support and resources for staff dealing with children and young people experiencing additional pressures from the last year – including trauma, anxiety, or grief – through the Wellbeing for Education Recovery programme.
- funding for an adapted 'Link' programme designed to improve partnerships between health and education leaders in local areas, raise awareness of mental health concerns and improve referrals to specialist help when needed.
Helping students and parents understand the assessment process You may find it useful to share the following with pupils and parents as we approach the deadline for the submission of teacher assessed grades. Summer Schools: extended sign-up window Some schools have asked if they can still sign up to the programme and we are therefore keeping the sign-up form open until Friday 28 May. Schools can access their funding allocation before signing up for the programme to indicate they intend to run a summer school. The process takes no more than a couple of minutes. Further information is available in our guidance on summer schools and you can also watch a webinar recording hosted by DfE. Please contact the team at Learning.RECOVERY@education.gov.uk if you have any questions. Reducing teacher workload – share your stories We're working with regional school leaders to update the school workload reduction toolkit. We're collecting examples of where schools have kept, adapted or abandoned existing ways of working over the past year to save time, be more efficient and cut down on workload. We are looking for tools, documents, or new ways of working that schools have introduced to include in the toolkit, so that we can help schools reduce workload. If you have any examples you would like to share or would like to get involved please get in touch. New model music curriculum We have published a new music curriculum for Key Stages 1-3 to support plans for all children to have access to an excellent music education. As well as ensuring all pupils can benefit from knowledge-rich and diverse lessons, the curriculum will make it easier for teachers to plan lessons and help to reduce workload. |
