Argentina: Fresh Deciduous Fruit Semi-annual

For MY 2020/21, Post revises down its estimate for fresh apple production to 560,000 MT. Fresh pear production is estimated to increase to 620,000 MT. Exports are projected to fall to 100,000 MT for apples but remain stable at 320,000 MT for pears, in line with USDA Official. The COVID-19 pandemic has had no major impact on the apple and pear industries due to public-private coordination on stringent protocols. However, ongoing economic and financial difficulties continue to undermine Argentine fruit exporters' competitiveness in international markets.

Chile: Fresh Deciduous Fruit Semi-annual

Post estimates a decline in production and export of table grapes, apples, and pears due to moderate temperatures and unexpected rainfall during the summer, which ultimately decreased yields. The intense rainfall affected table grape crops the most, thus production and exports will decline by 21 percent in MY2020/21 totaling 615,000 metric tons (MT) and 475,000 MT, respectively. In MY2020/21, apple production will reach 1,095,000 MT (4.8 percent decrease) and exports 647,000 MT (2.0 percent decrease). Pear production will reach 200,000 MT (9.1 percent decline) and 106,000 (8.6 percent decline).

China: China Notifies Draft Safety Standard for Use of Food Additives as SPS CHN 1217

On April 13, 2021, China notified a revised draft of the National Food Safety Standard for Use of Food Additives (GB2760) to the WTO SPS Committee as G/SPS/N/CHN/1217. The comment deadline is June 12, 2021. China has not announced an implementation date for the revised standard. Comments can be sent to China's SPS Enquiry Point at sps@customs.gov.cn. This report contains an unofficial translation of the draft standard.

Romania: Romanian Grain Production is Poised to Rebound

Year-on-year Romanian grain production in marketing year (MY) 2021/22 is projected to grow by 28 percent following last year's severe summer drought. Recent abundant rainfall has improved soil moisture throughout Romania. Cold temperatures and frequent rains delayed the spring planting. With the prospects of a larger harvest, Romania is poised to reemerge as a major international grain exporter. Wheat exports are expected to grow by 54 percent, while corn exports are expected to increase by 31 percent over the previous MY.

Russia: Draft Amendments to EAEU Regulation on Safety of Meat Notified to WTO

Russia notified the World Trade Organization (WTO) of draft amendments to the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) Technical Regulation (TR) on Safety of Meat and Meat Products via G/TBT/N/RUS/114. The draft measure will somewhat relax the TR requirements for nutrition labeling of meat products based on the relevant international experience and regulations, including those of the United States. The public comment period for the draft will close on July 12, 2021. Interested U.S. parties are encouraged to share their comments and concerns with the National Institute of Standards and Technology at ncsci@nist.gov. For potential inclusion in the U.S. official position, please send your comments by June 28, 2021.

Thailand: Rice Price - Weekly

Export prices for all grades of rice remain unchanged from the previous week.

United Arab Emirates: GCC-4 US Agricultural and Related Product Export Update

Overall U.S. agricultural and related product exports to the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, and Kuwait (GCC-4) are higher by 3 percent from January to March 2021 compared to the same time last year. The increase was mostly driven by large bulk commodity purchases as GCC-4 governments moved to secure additional stocks due to food security concerns. Overall exports remain muted due to a weak recovery in the United Arab Emirates, and no recovery in exports to Qatar and Oman.
