 May 26, 2021 Dear BRS Stakeholder, The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is extending deregulation to Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc.'s (Pioneer), corn variety developed using genetic engineering, designated as DP56113 maize. The corn variety is engineered for maintenance and recovery of male-sterile corn breeding lines for use in the Seed Production Technology for Africa process.
APHIS previously reviewed and deregulated the traits in DP56113 maize in another corn variety developed by Pioneer, referred to as DP-32138-1 maize. Along with Pioneer's extension request, APHIS also prepared a Plant Pest Risk Similarity Assessment (PPRSA), concluding that DP56113 maize is not more likely to pose a plant pest risk than the previously deregulated DP-32138-1 maize.
APHIS reached a Record of Categorical Exclusion Determination based on its PPRSA and made both documents and the deregulation extension request available for public review and comment for 30 days. APHIS reviewed all public comments on these documents and determined DP56113 maize is unlikely to pose a plant pest risk and is extending deregulation. The effective date of this deregulation extension is May, 21, 2021. #
