Statistics in Schools brings subjects to life using real-world Census Bureau data to create materials for use year after year at all grade levels.

Statistics Are Everywhere!

Mathematics and Statistical Awareness Month

April is Mathematics and Statistical Awareness Month. You can find statistics everywhere—on baseball fields, road trips, and even on your smartphone. Learn how Statistics in Schools is bringing awareness to the classroom about the value and use of data in our everyday lives. We offer a variety of classroom resources with real-world Census Bureau data to help introduce students to interesting and relevant statistics in a kid-friendly way. There's something available for every grade level! This newsletter provides a sampling of our math activities, Fun Facts, and a warm-up activity with data related to April observances.

Looking at Numbers of Births Using a Line Graph is a fun activity to familiarize elementary students with creating graphs with large numbers and how to determine the appropriate scale.

Our What Is a Statistical Question? activity helps middle school students understand the concept of variability within a data set—and how to distinguish the difference between statistical and other types of questions.

Older students might find interest in learning about national median earnings with our Differences in Earnings Across Sex and Educational Attainment: Comparing Box Plots activity. This activity has students interpret box plots that represent median earnings based on educational attainment.

That's just a few of the many free k-12 activities we offer. For more, check out our Math page!

National Pet Day

National Pet Day

Did you know that April 11 is National Pet Day? There are about 71,000 veterinarians around the country to care for the nation's pets. Show some love to our furry friends with this 5-Minute Warm-Up Challenge that teaches students about different careers in the veterinary and animal care fields. Then, they can use the data to discuss the pros and cons of the job field of their choice.

Earth Day, April 22

Earth Day

Inspire awareness and appreciation for the world around us with facts about things that impact the earth. For example, less than 1 percent of people in the United States ride a bike to work. How would it reduce our carbon footprint if more people biked or walked instead of driving to work?

Use our Fun Facts handout and teaching guide to help spark a conversation with students on ways to celebrate Earth Day. They can learn about different ways homes are heated, renewable energy sources, and more.
