The nostalgia of the last week of October is so strong, isn't it. It's that kid-at-heart feeling that goes with Halloween, though I never quite got over the fact that my brother returned from his trick-treat adventure with candies his younger sisters (me) never found in our close-to-home bags. The giant box of Dots, the $100,000 bars. You understand.
Mom always had a pot of something easy to eat on the stove on Halloween night. For my mother-in-law, Louise, it was big, warm pot of chili. This week, I'm all set to make our favorite chili menu, and I thought you might enjoy it, too. This chili has such deep Arabic flavors from warm spices like our 7 Spice blend, topped with a dollop of labneh and a shower of chopped fresh mint (I see a few mint tops coming up in the garden!!!). Scoop it up with pita chips that you make or buy (the ones in clamshells are better than the ones in cardboard boxes...).
Scroll down for a chili menu for your Halloween and many more evenings ahead.
In the shop, the Lebanese spice line is a customer favorite, thank you! Here we have the flavor makers that level up every dish with something "more"--the 7 Spice for the chili, and of course our authentic Lebanese Za'atar spice, Mint Salts, plus the freshest Mahleb you'll ever find, for baking. Get your pantry lined up...holidays are on the way!
Bless your hands,
The Chili.
Chickpeas, rich tomato base, MINT!, labneh, you get the picture.
Use thin or thick pita for these crunchers. Watch out: they are addictive! And with homemade, not only are they fresher, you get to control the salt and oil. Bake or fry.
Lots of you are asking about the saj for bread baking! You'll find the full tutorial in my Lebanese Baking cookbook. Get info about what a saj is, where to purchase it, and other equipment you need here:
