Born in Marshall, Texas, Foreman won the gold medal in boxing at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City and defeated Joe Frazier for the world heavyweight title in 1973. The following year, he lost to Muhammad Ali in the famed "Rumble in the Jungle" in Zaire, but he reclaimed his title in 1994 after an extended absence from the sport, becoming the oldest ever to achieve the feat. Foreman is also known for promoting the George Foreman Grill, a kitchen appliance he touted in infomercials as "so good, I put my name on it." The company that manufactured the device sold over 100 million units, earning Foreman substantially more than he made during his entire boxing career. Following his retirement from boxing, Foreman appeared on sitcoms and became an ordained minister, leading revivals in the Houston area. He is the father of 12 children, including five sons named George. On Saturday, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick proposed building a statue of Foreman in Houston similar to that of the fictional boxer Rocky in Philadelphia. "George was the real deal," said Patrick. | March Madness Update Several Texas teams advanced to the Sweet 16 round in the NCAA men's and women's basketball tournaments, while four were eliminated in the first and second rounds.
