Article Icon 1Supreme Court Lets Texas Abortion Ban Stand

The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear a case concerning whether Texas' abortion ban contradicts federal law requiring hospitals to provide abortions if the mother’s life is at risk.

This decision was issued without explanation and upholds a lower court's ruling that blocked the Biden administration's efforts to require Texas hospitals to follow federal law.

Attorneys for the state have argued Texas law allows a woman to get an abortion if her life is in danger, although the Texas Medical Board has struggled to provide guidance identifying what conditions would qualify for this exception.

Article Icon 1West Texas Geyser Still Going

The 100-foot geyser that erupted near Toyah on Wednesday last week continues to spew water and oil, baffling experts and drawing attention from locals, journalists, and environmental advocates.

Officials with the Texas Railroad Commission believe the geyser is coming from an abandoned oil well, but they aren’t sure who owns it. In June, a ranch about 100 miles away in Pecos County saw several plugged oil wells come back to life in a less spectacular fashion.

Some industry experts believe the leaks are due to seismic activity in the Permian Basin, where fracking is frequently used to extract oil and natural gas.

Energy infrastructure company Kinder Morgan is on-site trying to contain the geyser, and the Federal Aviation Administration has implemented a no-fly zone in the area.

A new list of the safest cities in the country ranks more than a dozen in Texas as particularly at risk of a natural disaster.

The WalletHub ranking of 182 cities scored the 150 largest cities in the country (plus the two largest cities in each state) on home and community safety, financial safety, and natural disaster risk.

Houston was ranked most at risk of a natural disaster, while seven cities in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex were ranked 171st or lower. San Antonio was ranked 162, Amarillo 154th, and Austin 142nd.

Laredo and El Paso were the only cities in Texas ranked higher than at least half of the other cities in the list.

The Flyover

Cambodia isn’t mentioned often in the news, but the country is still reeling from the genocide of as many as 3 million people in the 1970s. The dictator Pol Pot targeted religious minorities, “intellectuals” (anyone wearing glasses could count), and professionals such as lawyers and
doctors.

The losses have left the nation poverty-stricken, with low literacy, limited health care, and little sanitation safety. All are especially threatening to vulnerable children in the country.

OneHope is bringing light into the darkness. They’re reaching children and youth with lessons on health and sanitation while sharing the eternal hope of Jesus in a life-changing program.
