Hello, And Happy New Year! I want to get in early before everyone's inboxes and feeds are inundated with the usual January messages. This is a topic close to my heart and I want to share something with you as you begin 2024. All those 'new year, new you' type of narratives play into our insecurities and prompt us to try unrealistic, often unhealthy, and largely unsustainable diets. The thing is, I can really relate to the desire for a silver bullet. When my mental and physical health hit rock bottom in 2011, I started searching for that elusive quick fix. I wish I knew then what I know now; that true health is a long-term game. It should feel joyful, abundant, delicious, flavoursome, textured and uplifting. And never about rigid diets, strict plans and denying yourself. So, my reminder this January is to take a step back from anything that makes you feel like you're not enough as you are today. Ditch the diets. Skip the fads. Don't punish yourself. Instead of overhauling everything and then berating yourself for falling off an unrealistic bandwagon, choose simple, doable building blocks that will unlock a healthier life. Tap into a world of flavour. Focus on the little things. Take up tiny habits that move you 1% closer to your long-term goals each day. Think about adding an extra portion of veggies to your meal, try batch cooking at the weekend for healthy work lunches, give yourself five minutes of calm in the mornings, try a 10-minute home exercise class. Let's make 2024 the year we realise wellness can be simple, easy and delicious. | | Hello,
And Happy New Year! I wanted to put a note at the top of your inbox. This is something that's incredibly important to me. Every January we are inundated with 'new year, new me' marketing. A narrative that tends to exacerbate our insecurities and prompt us to start unrealistic, oftentimes unhealthy and largely unsustainable diets. We know diets don't work, 80-90% of them achieve nothing in the long-term. Like everyone I relate to the desire to find a silver bullet, a quick 'magic' answer. When my mental and physical health hit rock bottom in 2011 I started searching for that elusive quick-fix too. I assumed the journey to better health would be both quick and linear, that I could do one plan and be 'fixed', then revert to my old habits, keeping the results. I wish I knew then what I know now; that true health is a long-term game. It's not about rigid diets or strict plans. Instead healthy living should feel joyful, abundant, delicious, flavoursome, textured, uplifting. So, my reminder this January is to take a step back from anything that makes you feel like you're not enough as you are today. Ditch the diets. Skip the fads. Don't punish yourself. Instead of overhauling everything and berating yourself for inevitably falling off an impossibly unrealistic bandwagon, choose simple building blocks that over 365 unlock a healthier life. Tap into a world of flavour. Focus on the little things. Take up tiny habits that move you 1% closer to your long-term goals each day. Think about adding an extra portion of veggies to your meal, try batch cooking at the weekend for healthy work lunches, give yourself 5-minutes of calm in the mornings, try a 10-minute home exercise class. Let's make 2024 the year we realise wellness can be simple, quick and delicious. |
