This week's edition focuses on protecting young people at work, as we highlight the risks those under the age of 18 face in the workplace. We also have information on an updated asbestos publication, as well as a link to a survey on asbestos regulation. For all the latest health and safety updates visit our website. | | | When employing a young person under the age of 18, employers have the same responsibilities for their health, safety and welfare as they do for other employees. Young people are more likely to be new to the workplace and could be facing unfamiliar risks. Workers are as likely to have an accident in the first six months at a workplace as they are during the whole of the rest of their working life. Asbestos can be found in any building built before the year 2000 and it causes around 5,000 deaths every year. HSE has recently published a revised version of an asbestos publication. The new edition of 'Asbestos: The Analysts' Guide' (HSG248) provides clarification on technical and personal safety issues, especially in relation to sampling and 4-stage clearances. New information on sampling soils for asbestos is also included. HSE is also currently reviewing the regulations around asbestos and wants to hear from you about how they are working. Responses will help us continue to protect people from asbestos and the lung diseases it causes. | A paper recycling company has been fined £600,000 following the death of a 20-year-old agency worker who suffered fatal crush injuries. HSE's investigation found significant failings in the management of workplace transport risks at the site, including issues relating to operator competence and supervision and monitoring.
