This week's edition highlights the COVID-secure measures businesses need to take as the lifting of restrictions is delayed. In addition, there is information on a webinar introducing new ladder safety guidance, news of an online demonstration of a new MSD tool, details about the latest enforcement action and news of our latest job vacancies. For all the latest health and safety updates visit our website. | | | As the lifting of COVID restrictions is delayed in England, Scotland and Wales, HSE is continuing to carry out spot checks and inspections on businesses to check COVID-secure measures remain in place. Businesses should continue to follow the relevant government guidance on working safely, including a regularly updated COVID risk assessment. The following COVID-secure measures remain unchanged: During the spot checks and inspections, HSE will provide guidance if required but, where businesses are not managing the risk, they will take action. Further information on spot checks and inspections is available on our website. Falls from ladders lead to many fatalities and major injuries are also caused by working at height. HSE and the Ladder Association have joined forces to release two new ladder safety guidance documents. They will be introduced at a live webinar 'Ladder safety today: new guidance for employers' on 15 July at 10.30am. Find out more and/or register for the webinar. Our website also has plenty of guidance to ensure ladders are used safely and there is specific advice on: | A private security company has been fined £250,000 after an employee suffered life-changing injuries when he was assaulted by four individuals at a young offenders' training facility. An investigation by HSE found that G4S Care and Justice Services (UK) Ltd failed to ensure robust procedures were put in place, and that inexperienced staff were not working alone with groups of young people who presented a high risk of violence. Read this press release for full details. Other recent enforcement news includes: HSE is demonstrating a new tool to assess musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). It is an all-in-one digital solution that is being developed to support the existing manual handling assessment charts (the MAC tool). The new tool has been designed to simplify the process of completing each assessment, with a logical step-by-step approach, saving your assessors time in populating and interpreting the results manually. Meanwhile, textile manufacturer Herbert Parkinson have received the 'Risk-reduction through design' Award 2020/21, sponsored by HSE and Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF). They received the award for an innovative tool that prevents pain in workers' fingers and hands.
