Study Shows Juniper Removal Increases Rate of Growth in Sage Grouse Populations In the Great Basin of North America, the expansion of juniper woodlands is threatening the sagebrush biome. The Greater Sage-grouse is widespread in the Great Basin and considered an indicator for the condition of sagebrush ecosystems. This NRCS Conservation Effects Assessment Project-supported study assessed the population response of sage-grouse to juniper removal. The results indicate a steady increase in the sage-grouse population in the treatment area relative to the adjacent untreated area. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of targeted conifer removal as a management strategy for conserving sage-grouse populations. Read More
