| Pennsylvania dairy barn, May 1943 | | June is National Dairy Month! To celebrate, we share this 78-year-old photograph of Ayrshire cows at evening milking time on the Loy family dairy farm in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Mrs. Loy hand milks a cow. Her 12-year-old son Walter pours the milk through a strainer into one of the 10-gallon cans that will later be taken to a nearby receiving station. Sixteen-year-old Edgar adjusts the milking machine. The barn cat waits patiently for a hand-out! This is one of hundreds of photographs in the Emerson Merlyn Brooks Papers and is featured in the Special Collections exhibit: The American Dairy Industry. | | | |
