Hello everyone!
It's already June which means that summer is almost officially here! My vegetables are growing nicely and I'm soo looking forward to fresh veggies this summer as well as some homemade Maesil Chung (Green Plum Syrup) that I recently started making. Ume plums are still in season so look for them at your local asian grocery stores.
This month there are two holidays - Dano 단오 (June 14th) in Korea and Father's Day (June 20th) in the US. There's also 6.25 (pronounced as numbers Yuk Yio) which is the day North Koreans invaded South Korea and was the start of the Korean war. The war went on until 7/27 1953 and you can read more about it HERE.
Dano is a traditional Korean holiday that originated 2,000 years ago as an elaborate shamanistic ritual to honor the sky deity at the end of sowing season. It is celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar as this day is believed to be full of yang (positive energy), with many people wearing their finest clothing in hues of red and blue and spending the day enjoying music, mask dances and wine. On this day, women wash their hair with water boiled with Sweet Flag (Chang Po 창포) to add shine. It is also the day where Koreans pray for good harvest as they would have finished planting rice fields by this time.
Traditional foods enjoyed on Dano are various kinds of green Tteok (Rice Cakes) made with mugwort (ssuk) for example and punch made from freshly picked cherries (Aengdu Hwachae 앵두화채). Women compete in a swing competition (Geun-ae-tagi 그네타기) to see who could swing the highest, while men compete in wrestling matches (Ssireum 씨름). Wrestling was a popular event because the winner used to be awarded a bull as a prize!
