The following GAIN reports were released on Tuesday, June 8, 2021. _______ On May 27, 2021, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) confirmed Canada's successful application for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) negligible risk status. On April 28, mass protests erupted across Colombia in response to President Duque's tax reform bill. Despite the bill being withdrawn, the protests and unrest continue and are obstructing the movement of goods throughout Colombia, impeding bilateral agricultural trade, and impacting food prices in the country. The agricultural sector is sustaining major losses due to road blockades and unrest. The Colombian Ministry of Agriculture estimates economic losses of more than USD 700 million, due to road blockages and raw material shortages impacting the production and transport of food. Of the 32 Colombian departments, 29 have been impacted by the disruptions in the agricultural supply chain. With 3,555 recorded High Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) infections in 27 European countries and involving 22.4 million poultry birds, the spring 2021 HPAI epidemic was one of the largest recorded in Europe. The epicenter of the epidemic was situated in Germany and Poland. A May 31, 2021 scientific report from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) documents this HPAI epidemic country by country, highlighting the need for farmers to maintain strict biosecurity measures to keep the disease away from farm flocks. HPAI-related import bans from affected European Union (EU) member states (MS) resulted in decreased EU poultry exports. Effective April 15, Iraq's Ministry of Agriculture issued a number of decisions to restrict the transshipment of wheat and barley inside Iraq to limit the entry of crops from unknown sources. The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture recently released its 2021 plans for total planted area of summer crops – corn and rice – following approval by the Ministry of Water Resources. Concern over the recent spike in domestic COVID cases prompted Taiwan's public to stock up on food and essential items. In response, Taiwan reviewed the standing inventory and near-term production/import plans for key agricultural commodities and food materials. Taiwan authorities are confident that the basic food supply will be sufficient for the next six months.
