GAIN Reports from June 17 and 18, 2021

GAIN Template Header

The following GAIN reports were released on June 17-18, 2021.

_______

Argentina: Citrus Semi-annual

For MY 2020/21, Post's revises its estimate for fresh lemon production to 1.15 million metric tons (metric tons), up 12 percent from prior estimates, as summer rains offset some drought impacts. For fresh sweet citrus production, Post lowers its production estimate to 670,000 MT for oranges with a stable production forecast for tangerines at 360,000 MT. Lemon and orange exports are forecast to decrease to 180,000 MT and 70,000 MT, respectively, a decrease of 10,000 MT for each fruit, while tangerine exports are expected to remain flat at 35,000 MT. The COVID-19 pandemic has not had a major impact on the activity of the citrus industry.

Burma: FAIRS Annual Country Report Annual

Prior to the February 1, 2021 military coup, Burma was in the process of updating many of its laws and regulations. In the current uncertain environment, the military regime's approach to policy development remains unclear. This report does not reflect any significant changes from the December 2020 report, but includes updates on the Pesticide Registration in Section 5.1; Import License in Section 9.1; Prohibited Imports in Section 9.2; Food Import and the Application of Import Recommendations in Section 9.3; Trade Facilitation in Section X; and point of content for Codex matters in Appendix I.

Burma: FAIRS Export Certificate Report Annual

This report lists the major certificates required by the Burmese government agencies for U.S agricultural products exported to Burma. The list of certificates primarily focuses on major U.S agricultural exports to Burma, such as soybeans and soybean meal, wheat products, distillers dried grains with solubles, meat and poultry products, fruits and vegetables, other grocery items, and seeds. This report reflects updated certificate requirements for imported meat, poultry, animal feed, and human food products. There are no changes in the certificate requirements from the previous report.

Burma: Rice Trade - Monthly

Burma's rice exports in June are forecast lower due to the continued closure of several check points along the Burma-China border and lower demand from EU countries. Overall rice exports in April and May, however, increased with rice exports to Bangladesh, China, and The Philippines. The continued devaluation of the Myanmar Kyats and continued purchases by exporters will likely result in higher domestic wholesale prices for both types of rice.

European Union: Citrus Semi-annual

In MY 2020/21, EU citrus production is projected to rebound 10.4 percent compared to previous season to 11.7 MMT. Favorable weather conditions in the top EU citrus-producing countries contributed to the recovery. Increased domestic supplies, higher demand for citrus derived from the COVID-19 pandemic, and the reopening of the hospitality sector may encourage EU citrus exports but discourage EU imports. Spain is the major citrus supplier to the EU market. Switzerland, Norway, and Serbia, followed by Canada, Brazil, and the Middle East continue to be strategic export markets outside the EU. In MY 2019/20, additional tariffs impacted citrus trade between the United States and the EU. Additional issues concerning trade agreements and agricultural bans may also influence global citrus trade.

Japan: Japan Feed Import Regulations and Standards

This report is an overview of Japan's import regulations and standards for feed, feed ingredients and feed additives.

Panama: Retail Foods

This report provides information to U.S. exporters of agricultural and related products on how to do business with the retail food sector in Panama. The coronavirus pandemic has changed consumption habits and purchasing methods of Panamanian consumers. Amid mobility restrictions and lockdowns in 2020, people opted to consume products via multiple online order and delivery systems as the new way customers prefer to purchase groceries.

South Africa: Citrus Semi-annual

The production of South African citrus, mainly soft citrus, new orange varieties, lemons and limes is estimated to continue its strong growth in the 2020/21 Marketing Year (MY), based on the increase in area planted, improved yields, high level of new-plantings coming into full production, and the minimal impact of COVID-19 on labor and input supply. This increase is expected to be partially offset by drought conditions in some production areas of the Eastern Cape, and hail damage in some production areas of Mpumalanga. Duty free exports of all citrus types to the United States under the African Growth Opportunity Act (AGOA) reached a peak of 91,402 MT in 2020, and are expected to continue their strong annual growth in 2021, as the United States is still considered a premium market.

Thailand: Rice Price - Weekly

Export prices of white and parboiled rice decreased slightly despite the appreciation of the Thai baht against the U.S. dollar due to a lack of new inquiries.

Ukraine: Food and Agricultural Import Regulations and Standards Export Certificate Report

There were no new bilateral certificates negotiated during the period from the second half of 2020 through the first half of 2021. The Export Certificate Matrix was updated to include new official generic certificates for live animals and reproductive materials. In 2020, Ukraine introduced generic sample certificates (Model Certificates) for products of animal origin that can be endorsed by the exporting country's authorities without additional negotiations. The Government of Ukraine (GOU) also published the list of regulations referenced in sample certificates.
