Event Announcement: Gender Equality and the World's Economic Recovery
Read this email in your browser. | | The COVID-19 pandemic created a crisis of gender inequity, setting back years of progress as women lost jobs at a higher rate than men and left the workforce in record numbers to take on the burden of unpaid child care. The World Economic Forum’s annual Global Gender Gap Report found COVID-19 set back gender equity decades. On the current trajectory, the world is expected to reach gender parity in 135.6 years versus previous predictions that it would take 99.5 years to reach parity -- a backsliding that can only be avoided with significant interventions, according to the report. While the crisis has exposed embedded inequities across social, economic and political systems, advocates and experts say it also presents an opportunity to build back more inclusively, sustainably and fairly. On June 28, in advance of the UN’s Generation Equality Forum in Paris, Foreign Policy will convene leading thinkers and doers across government, civil society and multilateral organizations to discuss how we can put women and gender equity at the center of global recovery plans. You’ll hear from these experts: - Anila Denaj, Minister of Finance and Economy, Albania
- Dr. Nadine Gasman Zylbermann, President, National Institute for Women of Mexico
- Jennifer Klein, Co-Chair and Executive Director, White House Gender Policy Council
- Anita Zaidi, President of Gender Equality, Gates Foundation
- Visit our website for more information about our program and speakers
Our conversation will: - Examine the gendered impacts of the past year’s global crises and consider how crisis response and relief efforts can incorporate a gender dimension to ensure an equitable recovery
- Explore opportunities to restore and accelerate women’s economic recovery
- Share best practices in data collection, technical assistance and capacity development
- Analyze gender-intentional policies and determine how civil society, government and multilateral organizations can adopt cross-cutting initiatives that deliver meaningful impact at scale
