Universities Partner with ICE

Several large universities plan to partner with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ICE under an agreement initiated by Governor Ron DeSantis, including Florida Atlantic University, the University of Florida, the University of South Florida, and the University of Central Florida.

"Florida is setting the example for states in combating illegal immigration and working with the Trump Administration to restore the rule of law," DeSantis previously said about the new requirements.

University police departments will be able to make immigration arrests after they have completed training with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

FAU student Jennica Charles, the daughter of Haitian immigrants, opposed the decision. "Who's to say that someone doesn't stop me and say, 'Oh, I look like I don't belong here?' I definitely think it's going to make people feel more unsafe, whether you are someone that has immigrant status or not."

Wrongly Freed Murderer Found

A man serving a life sentence for murder in Georgia was mistakenly released from prison and later found at his mother's home in Ocoee on Friday. Kathan Guzman had been out of prison for two weeks.

His mother, Iris Guzman, objected to law enforcement coming in full tactical gear to capture him, saying she double-checked before picking him up. "I got brushed off, 'Ma'am, we just get a piece of paper saying they go home, and they go home.' ... He was never out to hurt anyone, never running, evading."

However, the mother of the victim, who lives in Kissimmee, said she felt like a "sitting duck" while the two-state manhunt was underway.

Guzman was found guilty of strangling his 19-year-old ex-girlfriend, Delila Grayson, to death in October 2024.

Tests Find Mislabeled Shrimp

Genetic testing revealed that some shrimp being sold as "locally sourced" in Florida Gulf Coast restaurants were actually imported from India, Ecuador, and other foreign countries.

SeaD Consulting tested shrimp at 44 Tampa and St. Pete restaurants and found that only two were using local shrimp: Salt Shack on the Bay in Tampa and Stillwaters Tavern in St. Pete.

However, Gulf Coast shrimpers said on Friday that President Trump's tariffs may be a "lifeline" for their industry, encouraging more restaurants to buy local.

Shrimper Rodney Olander said, "We need to put a cap on the amount of shrimp that comes into the country ... So we're hoping again that with these tariffs, maybe that will turn things around. That's the only thing we got to hang our hat on right now. We're losing our industry."
