Noncitizens Face Removal from Voter Rolls

Fifteen Arizona counties are now taking steps to remove noncitizens from voter rolls, following last year's settlement of a lawsuit that claimed the counties failed to comply with the state's proof of citizenship law.

The counties have begun working with the Department of Homeland Security to review the status of registered voters who failed to provide proof of citizenship. Noncitizens will have their voter registrations canceled.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration recently dropped a President Biden-era legal challenge to Arizona's proof of citizenship law being applied to federal elections.

Rattlesnake Bites Jump

State health officials reported an increase in rattlesnake bites as warm weather and mating season draw snakes from their shelters.

The Arizona Poison and Drug Information Center reported at least one snake bite per day since March 20. April tends to be the busiest month for bites, as hikers and snakes come into closer contact.

Wildlife experts say most snake encounters occur on unmarked trails during the early morning and late afternoon. Rattlesnakes tend to avoid confrontation unless threatened, in which case they can lunge up to two-thirds of their body length to strike.

Medical treatment for a snake bite can cost more than $100,000, and recovery can take months. Here are safety tips on what you should do—and not do—if bitten.

Report: Saguaro Cacti Dying Faster

A video report details how saguaro cacti in Arizona are dying at a faster rate due to heat and drought.

Scientists say parts of the Sonoran Desert have seen a sharp uptick in dead or collapsing saguaros as the region deals with hotter, drier conditions and less recovery time between brutal summers.

Ecologists warn the trend could permanently reshape desert ecosystems. In 2023, scientists began looking for ways to breed saguaros that are better able to withstand heat.

Some speculate the saguaros' decline began in 2020, a year that shattered heat records and produced the driest monsoon season since record-keeping began in 1895.
