Coast Guard Calls Off Search

The U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search for five people still missing after a boat capsized off Florida's Atlantic Coast over the weekend.

Four survivors were rescued, and one body was recovered about 29 miles off St. Lucie Inlet, north of West Palm Beach. The search covered more than 1,200 square miles.

The capsized boat was discovered after a good Samaritan reported the incident on Sunday morning. Authorities say the voyage was likely a failed smuggling attempt, warning of the dangers of illegal and overloaded boat crossings.

Human Trafficking Education Bill Advances

A bill requiring all Florida public school staff to receive annual training about human trafficking is headed to the House floor after it cleared a committee with unanimous support.

The bipartisan proposal aims to help educators, custodians, nurses, and other school workers recognize and respond to signs of trafficking among students.

Supporters say the measure could help protect vulnerable kids, citing state data showing that 82% of verified child trafficking victims were enrolled in public schools the year after their abuse was confirmed.

Florida Housing Affordability Ranks 21st

Florida ranked 21st in the nation for housing affordability, according to a TradingPedia study using 2024 Redfin sales and third-quarter income data.

Despite price drops in cities like Tampa and Lakeland, Florida led the nation in home sales last year with 365,377. Key West remains the priciest place in the state to buy a home, with an average sales price of nearly $1.1 million.

The average cost of a house in Florida is $411,658, while the average income is $70,581.

Nationally, the median home price is now six times higher than the average income, highlighting the continued strain on homebuyers.
