I'm Richa, the face behind My Food Story. Welcome to this series where I send you an email exclusive tip/recipe every Wednesday - oops its Thursday today but we had a little email glitch yesterday Here's today's Tip/Kitchen Hack: I sound crazy, don't I? Don't worry, I promise there's logic involved. Have you ever found worms in vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli, etc., This is a great sign! It means that these vegetables are not doused in pesticides. If it's safe for a worm to eat, it's definitely safe for me too haha! However, what isn't safe is for me to directly use such vegetables for cooking. There is a very simple way to clean this though. Read on to know more:
Wash the vegetables: A thorough wash in room temperature water is essential to get rid of any dirt settled on the vegetables. You can also use a fruit and vegetable wash but I personally don't like using them Trim the vegetables: cut off and discard parts of the vegetable that you don't need such as the bottom stalk of the cauliflower. Cut the remaining into the desired size. Method 1: Fully submerge the vegetables in hot water along with 1-2 tablespoons of salt. Allow this to sit for 20 minutes. This will force the worms to come out of the vegetable. Do not strain into a colander, instead use a skimmer to transfer the vegetables into a colander. Now rinse the vegetables under cold water and use as desired. Method 2: I prefer this method. Bring water along with 1-2 tablespoons of salt to a boil. Add the cauliflower to this and cook for 5-8 minutes. Do not strain into a colander, instead use a skimmer to transfer the vegetables into a colander. This method partially cooks the vegetable so remember to adjust the cook time in your recipe. |
