Hello reader Yesterday, the sun was shining, so I thought I'd better get a wash on. It's been piling up because of all the wet weather. But my washing machine decided it had had enough and refused to work. Immediatley I had visions of piles of dirty clothes and no clean ones to put on and panic set in. How on earth did we manage without washing machines? My grandmother had six children and no washing machine until her children bought her a twin tub when they were grown up. I don't know how she coped, especially as she was a really good cook too and provided three cooked meals a day for the whole family. Her shepherd's pie is legendary. So was her pastry. She made many a mince pie in her time, but I don't think she ever made her own mincemeat. I'm not really a fan of the commercial stuff, so I've made my own for many years. A jar of homemade mincemeat makes a nice festive gift too. I used to use vegetarian suet in my mincemeat, but I'm not really a fan of the stuff, so these last few years I've gone fat free. And you know what? It's much nicer without it. What's so good about making your own is that not only is it nicer and really easy to do, but you can add what you like and omit what you don't. So this week's post is all about homemade mincemeat. Hit REPLY and let me know if you make your own and what you like to put in it. There's more to mincemeat than mince pies. I use it for all sorts of things. It makes a great last minute Christmas cake. CT hates mince pies, he's not really a fan of mincemeat either, but if I add it to other bakes he's usually happy to tuck in. Here are a few ideas: Keep cooking and stay safe.
